Abstract |
Prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing alarmingly and because of poor metabolic control, patients with diabetes are likely to develop micro and macro vascular complications of diabetes, which can be collectively called as diabetic vascular diseases(DVD). As complications are present in type 2 diabetes during diagnosis itself, prevention has a major role in reducing both macro and microvascular complications. Multifactorial intervention, which involves pharmacological therapy targeting hyperglycaemia, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and microalbuminuria; low-dose aspirin along with regular exercise; dietary adjustment; lifestyle changes; and smoking cessation have shown to avert cardiovascular disease. This review article gives a detailed overview of pathogenesis of various vascular complications in diabetes and the importance of various non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions in prevention of these complications.
