Fast food and heart health

Abstract
With easy and round the clock availability of fast food, India – a nation in transition, is facing a double burden of over- and under-nutrition. Rapid increase in the fast food consumption has escalated incidences of many chronic degenerative diseases including heart disease, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, cancer and other associated conditions among individuals. Not surprisingly, these diseases of adulthood have now trickled down to the younger generation. It has been rightly projected by public health experts in the U.S. that this would be the first generation of kids to have a lower life span than their parents something which is unprecedented – first time in the history of man kind. With fast foods now becoming a significant component of our diets, rather than banning them, we need to educate the general public about their ill-effects; redesign these foods and formulate policies to regulate and promote the consumption of safe food.
